Celebration Scenes
2017

Acts on the aesthetics and rituals of celebration, that enhance the experience of ‘getting lost’ during a club weekender at De School, Amsterdam.

For many clubbers, partying is a way of escaping from daily life. Artificial stimulants are used to get lost. ‘Celebration Scenes’ adds stimulants to enhance the experience of ‘getting lost’ by playing with alienation and repetition. The performances make visitors question if we’re preparing for a celebration, or if it has already happened. Some visitors take a second look to make sure they’re not hallucinating. The scenes show links to celebration of birthday, wedding and funeral but are no exact reproduction. The scenes take typical celebration elements such as balloons, garlands and flowers, and typical actions like dressing up and decorating, and put them into the context of the techno club. It’s an investigation on how the public reacts to these elements in their new context.
For the six performers I made caps with a veil of hair. This veil creates a distance, but I briefed the performers to remain human and not ignore reactions of visitors.

Acts:
- The Funeral: placing podium on dance floor (basement and Muzieklokaal) (no images due to De School's no picture policy)
- The Wedding I: carrying around flowers (hallways)
- The Wedding II: combing the hair of the caps (toilets, cloakroom)
- The Birthday I: hanging up and taking down garlands (smoking room)
- The Birthday II: blowing up and inhaling balloons (garden)
